Teaser Poster Comparison : Taken 2 vs Redemption

It is obvious that both these film poster are teaser posters as they give little away about the plot, it is purely to whet your appetite. It has a picture of the main character and his name above the main image or film title to try and sell it. Liam Neeson is a selling point of the film because he is a big Hollywood actor, although Jamie Widdison isn't a Hollywood actor we are purely putting his name there as we are replicating a mainstream and successful film poster.

Both films share the same Genre of Thriller and a subgenre in a sense of crime. This apparent from Neeson holding a gun and Widdison clenching his fist, you know that there is going to be some violence in it. With the redemption trailer you can tell its thriller as he isn't just clenching his fists but in fact he is also staring at them, this shows guilt as he cant believe what he's done, it's his fault, he will amend it. In the Taken 2 trailer he is staring meaningfully into the distance as if he's got a deed to do, this gives off a thriller edge as the audience wants to know what he's looking at and why - suspense, tension.

Clues to the narrative of the film are purely given to us in the Tagline.

'First they took his daughter, now they're coming for him'. This makes it obvious that he's done something wrong or bad and he's going to pay, but as its Hollywood and Neeson's the main character we expect that he will come out on top.

'How far would you go for redemption?'  a direct rhetorical question to the audience. Why does Widdison need redemption? Is he getting redemption for himself? What's happened? These are the sorts of questions that would be floating through the audiences mind after reading this and there is only one way to get the answered and that is to watch it. Therefore it tries to hook the audience.

The images are a big giveaway, Widdison is obviously a teen, maybe a chav because of the hood and most likely going to be working class therefore. He is unarmed unlike Neeson suggesting that he is maybe of a slight higher class as he can afford and gun, unless he's stole it. Widdisons eyes are covered, the director doesn't what you to make direct eye contact in the slightest, this screams GUILT!

The font for Redemption is crumbly, jolty and uneven suggesting a catastrophic occurrence has happened, maybe a mental battle. Taken 2 is more IMPACT compared to Redemption but still shares the same faded and jolty effect. Taken 2 is also red suggesting blood, guts and violence, suggesting an action genre.

Both posters in general are very dark which doesn't quite suggest horror, definitely thriller though as the lighting on both Neeson's and Widdison's face suggest light at the end of the tunnel, if the proceed on their
journey they will get solitude

Both characters are dead central in both posters which automatically means they are the protagonists. The director wants you to create an emotional bond with them and get on their side.

The USP: for Redemption is feel its the working class nature of the protagonist, why does this boy deserve redemption?
Taken 2 i feel it pre assessor Taken has to be taken into account here as well, the USP for me is the fact that Neeson is getting on a bit, he doesnt look young like Widdison does or other male action stars like James Bond.

This is the website we got our Copyright Free Music off - http://freeplaymusic.com/

As we have to get music without it being copyrighted we searched this website for suitable audio. We stumbled upon 'Breaking Dawn' and 'Dark Night'. We found these by specifically searching genre on the website. We used the 'Feel' search box looked for tension as our film is a Thriller and Teaser Trailers are supposed to build Tension and Suspense.

We used 'Dark Night' for the beggining of our trailer to build tension and 'Breaking Dawn' for the end of our trailer as it has a more action theme to it and our trailer is getting to the 'knitty gritty' part.

The Compulsory Questions

Locations

This is Jake and Stuarts house. We filmed Stuarts suicide here and establishing shot of the whole trailer in which we make it clear that Jake and Stuart are brothers. Its a typical working class families house, nothing special highlighting the fact that its realistic so it applies to our social realism genre.

This is the railway in which we shot the killing of one of Jake's friends 'Jimmy'. Again this setting is perfect for social realism films espicially as teenagers are known to hang around dangerous places such as railway lines.

This is Attenborough Nature Reserve which another spot for the murder of one of Jake's Friends, in places it can be desolate, lonely and quiet so it is inf act a perfect place for a murder.

The Voice Over...

This is our voice over that will be spoken over the top of our teaser trailer, it will be read by Jake (Jamie) as he is the protagonist and the majority of the film is from his point of view. The main reason for having a voice over is to direct the narrative, without it the trailer would be a little confusing. The voice over itself is very deep, its Jake expressing his feeling on the tragic loss of his brother due to suicide. He's putting all of his cards on the table so to speak with a full confession of his actions and what he is going to do to get his Redemption.
We used a rhetorical question at the end to involve the audience, from research we have found that direct address is likely to get the audience thinking about the film and indeed how far they would go for redemption!

'He was my brother,
Bullied by me and my friends,
Driven to suicide,
This was never meant to happen,
We didn't know what the consequences would be,
I will avenge his death,
If it's the last thing I do,
So let me ask you this,
How far would you go for redemption?'

Audience Reaction and Feedback to the Redemption Trailer!

The feedback tells us that what we set out to create and how we wanted the audience to read it has gone to plan, this is a success! :)

Ideology

Karl Marx - Ideology
Ideology basically means a set of ideas, values and beliefs of a particular group.
Ideologies are common in religion and society, as Britain used to be a predominately christian/catholic country and society these values have been passed down.  When Henry VIII challenged the catholic church and the Pope by asking for a divorce he challenged the ideologies a competing ideology.

In today's society ideologies are always being challenged as traditions are being thrown out the door, David Cameron for example who is a conservative believes in tradition, individualism and is very religious, and yet he his pro gay marriages which in the bible is frowned upon and in the 1960's was still a crime.

A very well known ideology in Hollywood is the 'American Dream', a belief that if you work hard you will succeed, therefore it states that the rich and famous deserve there position and those that have not tried hard enough will remain poor. But what of people who are born in to money and fame, or people like Kim Kardashian who people will argue have done nothing to get rich, why should they be rich? Maybe a left wing approach, Communism where everyone is equal makes more sense.

These ideologies can be found everywhere, even our film...

The Dominant Reading : Our Film has a typical christian ideology, 'Redemption' where your sins can be forgiven.

Colossians 1:14
'in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins'

Jake is redeeming himself as he has murdered his brother, to do this he must kill everyone who ever hurt his brother. It is a personal vendetta in a way that he gets justice for his brother, if he doesnt he will feel he has failed. Jake comes from a working class background and is white, as our target audience is likely to be more working class we feel they will sympathise with him more and they will have an emotional bond with him.
(Murdering all your friends may seem a little far fetched but thats what makes this a film (and more importantly a film with a drama genre) and not a reality program)

The Oppositional Reading : Jake bullied his brother Stuart as well as his friends so why should he be redeemed and not the others. He is from a working class background, white portrayed as being chav like and is extremely violent, therefore the audience will not sympathize with him.
