Ideology

Karl Marx - Ideology
Ideology basically means a set of ideas, values and beliefs of a particular group.
Ideologies are common in religion and society, as Britain used to be a predominately christian/catholic country and society these values have been passed down.  When Henry VIII challenged the catholic church and the Pope by asking for a divorce he challenged the ideologies a competing ideology.

In today's society ideologies are always being challenged as traditions are being thrown out the door, David Cameron for example who is a conservative believes in tradition, individualism and is very religious, and yet he his pro gay marriages which in the bible is frowned upon and in the 1960's was still a crime.

A very well known ideology in Hollywood is the 'American Dream', a belief that if you work hard you will succeed, therefore it states that the rich and famous deserve there position and those that have not tried hard enough will remain poor. But what of people who are born in to money and fame, or people like Kim Kardashian who people will argue have done nothing to get rich, why should they be rich? Maybe a left wing approach, Communism where everyone is equal makes more sense.

These ideologies can be found everywhere, even our film...

The Dominant Reading : Our Film has a typical christian ideology, 'Redemption' where your sins can be forgiven.

Colossians 1:14
'in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins'

Jake is redeeming himself as he has murdered his brother, to do this he must kill everyone who ever hurt his brother. It is a personal vendetta in a way that he gets justice for his brother, if he doesnt he will feel he has failed. Jake comes from a working class background and is white, as our target audience is likely to be more working class we feel they will sympathise with him more and they will have an emotional bond with him.
(Murdering all your friends may seem a little far fetched but thats what makes this a film (and more importantly a film with a drama genre) and not a reality program)

The Oppositional Reading : Jake bullied his brother Stuart as well as his friends so why should he be redeemed and not the others. He is from a working class background, white portrayed as being chav like and is extremely violent, therefore the audience will not sympathize with him.

The Redemption Film Poster.

We have finally made our film poster here is a step by step process of how we made it.7

Firstly we took some photos of Jamie (Jake) for the main image of the poster,
Here is our selection...

To get the poses, lighting and angles to look professional we used the photography suite in our college which allowed to use a variety of lighting and background, notice how we used black and white, each of these colours had a different effect and we found that the white background brought out the blackness of Jamie's jumper which is an iconic symbol for our film which is why we have used it for our poster and magazine.

Here i am messing around with the lights to try and get a realistic lighting on Jamie.

Once we had chosen the best photo we had to use adobe photoshop to crop the image we wanted out and place it on our poster...

After hours of cropping, shifting and adding we finally came to this, the finished product.

Here is a short clip of us doing a photo shoot for the film poster

Character / Actor Profiles.

Josh Bakewell - Stuart Bennet.
- Stuart (me) wears a Indie Shirt buttoned to the top, Thick framed glasses, skinny black jeans and pointy suit shoes. These are typical of someone who wants to look different / indie hence we chose these items of clothing for Stuart.

Jamie Widdison - Jake Bennet.

- Jamie wears a black hoody notably with the hood up, grey jogging bottoms and vans which are typically worn more by chavs or "gangsters". This is an accurate representations of some teens today therefore it is relevant to the watching audience as they will be able to make a quick judgement of Jake.

The Questionnaire

Making a questionnaire would help us decide what the our target audience wanted us to create. knowing this would make for a better film.

We arranged the results in a series of Graphs...

As you can see our target audience is predominantly male, this will lead us to make our film aimed more at men rather than women. Despite the male dominance we want to aim our film at women as well as doing this will broaden our films popularity. It will be mainly male orientated though...

Our film is aimed at people ( mainly men ) ages between 15 - 24 meaning the BBFC will be 15, the people we gave the questionnaire out to fit perfectly in this criteria.

Having asked our audience what their favourite thriller is, it will help us make similar codes and conventions in our film. Taken was the overall winner meaning we should probably have some fighting scenes, weapons and not a basic plot line which isn't over confusing, easy to follow.

This is a vital question to ask as we need to establish whether our target audience actually watches thriller, if they didn't then we would of had to alter what genre we would make our film, but as you can see a substantial amount watch thrillers.

We need to know what conventions our target audience would like us to use. Tension was the resounding winner, meaning we must build up tension throughout our trailer to interest our audience. Action and Death closely followed, as we have already established through the audience liking Taken out of all the Thrillers out there which has a lot of action and death, we must also prioritise these two conventions. despite blood and fast paced being the least favoured we will include them but on a lesser scale.

Another important question, whether our audience actually likes the sound on what we intend to make, a thriller drama. We feel this hybrid genre will work well together as it can build up tension and have a lot of action but at same time give a real depth into the lives of the characters so that the audience connects and has feelings for them. This would be a vital thing to have when watching Redemption.

Of course, Dramatic was the winner, this shows us that our audience not only enjoys thriller and drama but understands the conventions behind it. the fact that it is a thriller will make it exciting as this also a key convention. An unusual answer was "soaps", this is very weird if you were to think of it as just a thriller but as its drama as well there must be a depth to the characters lifestyle and backgrounds, this will make it "soap-like" and create the verisimilitude and realism.

This question was more or less top of our list, if seeing a trailer didn't make the audience want to go and see the film then what would be the point of making one! fortunately everyone said yes meaning we could proceed with our teaser trailer.

The data we collected here was a bit mixed meaning would would most likely have to use all 5 of these trailer conventions as they are all vital.

Motion Magazine: Step by Step

This is the sell line which tells the reader what else is inside the magazine.

Another sell line but in a circle, its more important

The masthead, its big to get the audiences attention and to establish what the magazine is about. I have chosen the colour gold as it represents "first place" and this magazine is supoosed to be the "best" or "ultimate".

The Strapline gives the audience even more information of whats going to be in the magazine.

This is the finished magazine without the main image.
There is a slanted strapline in the top right hand corner with more information.
The price is placed inbetween the "M" and i have made small so it is less noticable and therefore more buy able.
The Barcode is in the bottom right, it contains the issue number which will let audeicne now how many magazines they've missed.
The slogan boasts how good our magazine is to make people want to buy it.
Under the Motion Mast Head there is a website address, this is to attract the audience onto the website to make more money.

The finished product....
